Underwear is one of the most frequently worn items in your wardrobe—but also one of the easiest to overlook when it comes to replacing. Many people keep their underwear far longer than they should, which can affect comfort, hygiene, and even confidence. So how do you know when it’s time to retire your old pairs? Here’s a guide to the clear—and not-so-obvious—signs that your underwear has reached the end of its life.

When the Elastic Loses Its Grip

One of the first signs of worn-out underwear is a loose waistband or stretched-out elastic. If your briefs start slipping, your panties don’t stay in place, or your bra straps keep sliding off your shoulders, it’s a sure sign the elastic has lost its stretch. Over time, washing, sweat, and movement break down the fibers that give elastic its bounce. Once that support is gone, the fit and comfort go with it.

Visible Holes, Thinning Fabric, and Discoloration

It might seem obvious, but holes, thinning spots, and discoloration are clear indicators that it’s time to replace your underwear. Because underwear is washed frequently and sits close to the skin, the fabric naturally wears down. When it becomes sheer, rough, or faded, it can irritate your skin and lose its breathability. Persistent discoloration—especially in lighter fabrics—can also signal that the material isn’t getting fully clean anymore, even after washing.

When the Fit Changes

Underwear should fit snugly but comfortably. Over time, cotton, microfiber, and spandex can stretch or lose shape. If your underwear starts bunching, riding up, or sagging, it’s no longer doing its job. The same goes for bras: if the cups lose their shape, the band feels loose, or the underwire pokes, it’s time for a replacement. Poor fit doesn’t just feel uncomfortable—it can also cause chafing or skin irritation.

Hygiene: How Long Does Underwear Really Last?

Even with regular washing, underwear can accumulate bacteria and sweat residue deep in the fibers. Studies have shown that small amounts of bacteria can survive normal washing cycles, especially if you wash in cold water or mix underwear with other laundry. For hygiene and comfort, most experts recommend replacing underwear every 6 to 12 months, depending on how often you wear and wash them. If you work out frequently or live in a hot climate, you may need to replace them more often.

A good rule of thumb is to own enough pairs to rotate them evenly. Giving each pair a break between wears helps them last longer and stay fresher.

Materials That Last—and Those That Don’t

The lifespan of your underwear depends heavily on the material. Cotton is soft and breathable but tends to wear out faster than synthetic blends like nylon or microfiber. Bamboo and merino wool can be more durable and odor-resistant but require gentle washing. To extend the life of your underwear, look for high-quality elastic, reinforced seams, and avoid fabric softeners, which can break down fibers over time.

When It’s Time to Let Go

As a general guideline, consider replacing your underwear when:

  • The elastic is stretched or twisted
  • The fabric is thin, torn, or discolored
  • The fit feels off or uncomfortable
  • There’s a lingering odor after washing
  • You simply don’t feel good wearing it

Underwear isn’t just about function—it’s about feeling good in your own skin. Putting on a fresh, well-fitting pair can boost your comfort and confidence more than you might think.

Make Replacement a Routine

It might seem like a small thing, but going through your underwear drawer a couple of times a year is a healthy habit. Toss what’s worn out and invest in a few high-quality pieces instead of many cheap ones. It’s better for your comfort, hygiene, and even the environment.

Replacing your underwear on time isn’t about vanity—it’s about self-care. And sometimes, the smallest refresh can make the biggest difference in how you feel every day.
