Whether you’re kayaking on a mountain lake, paddleboarding along the coast, or taking a dip in a nearby river, choosing the right clothing for water activities is essential. The right gear keeps you comfortable, safe, and ready for whatever conditions nature throws your way. Here’s a guide to help you pick outdoor clothing that fits your activity, climate, and comfort level.

Know the Conditions – and Dress for Them

Water environments can change quickly, and temperature, wind, and sun exposure all play a role in what you should wear. Think in layers and choose materials that handle moisture and movement well.

  • Warm weather: In summer, focus on lightweight, quick-drying fabrics that protect you from the sun. A UV-protective rash guard or thin neoprene top can shield your skin and provide a bit of warmth if you get wet.
  • Cool weather: When the air cools down, staying warm even when damp becomes key. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer made of synthetic fabric or merino wool, and add a wind- and water-resistant outer layer.
  • Cold water: For extended time in cold water, a wetsuit or drysuit is worth the investment. A wetsuit traps a thin layer of water that your body warms up, while a drysuit keeps you completely dry and insulated.

Materials That Make a Difference

The right materials can make or break your experience on the water. Avoid cotton—it absorbs water, becomes heavy, and loses insulation when wet. Instead, look for:

  • Synthetic fibers (polyester, nylon, spandex): Lightweight, flexible, and quick-drying—great for base layers and activewear.
  • Merino wool: Naturally warm, odor-resistant, and still insulates when damp.
  • Neoprene: The go-to material for wetsuits, gloves, and booties. It provides insulation and protection from cold water.
  • Waterproof membranes (like Gore-Tex): Ideal for jackets and pants that need to block wind and spray while allowing moisture to escape.

Focus on Fit and Freedom of Movement

When you’re paddling, swimming, or balancing on a board, your clothing should move with you. Tight clothing can restrict motion, while loose garments can drag in the water. Try on your gear and mimic the movements you’ll make—reach forward, twist, and bend—to ensure a comfortable fit.

Stretchy fabrics and flat seams help prevent chafing and make long hours on the water more enjoyable.

Safety and Visibility

Visibility is a key part of safety on the water, especially in areas with boat traffic or low light. Choose bright colors like orange, red, or yellow, and look for reflective details that make you easier to spot.

And remember: a life jacket (PFD) is always part of your outfit, no matter your skill level. It should fit snugly but still allow you to move freely.

Footwear and Accessories

Your feet deserve attention too. Good water shoes or neoprene booties protect against sharp rocks, slippery surfaces, and cold temperatures. They also provide traction when launching or landing your craft.

Other useful accessories include:

  • Water gloves – for warmth and better grip on paddles.
  • Hat or cap – to shield your face from sun and glare.
  • Dry bag – to keep your phone, keys, and spare clothes safe and dry.

After Your Adventure – Care for Your Gear

Outdoor water gear lasts longer when properly maintained. Rinse everything in fresh water after use, especially if you’ve been in saltwater, and let it air-dry in the shade. Avoid direct sunlight or dryers, which can damage neoprene and technical fabrics.

Balance Function and Comfort

The best outdoor clothing for water activities is the kind that fits your needs and makes you feel confident. Some people prefer lightweight, minimalist gear, while others want maximum warmth and protection. Whatever your style, the goal is the same: to stay safe, comfortable, and free to enjoy your time on the water.

With the right clothing, you can extend your season, explore new places, and make every moment on the water more enjoyable—whether you’re paddling, swimming, or simply soaking up the view.
